This collaborative mural was created with nine Chaparral High School students, whose ideas guided the design. I served as the lead artist, and the project was made possible by ArtReach and their mural team leader, Izzy Halpern.

Each student chose a native plant or animal that symbolizes resilience. Subjects include the California Poppy, Agave, Prickly Pear Cactus, White Sage, Desert Cactus Wren, Roadrunner, Coyote, Western Banded Gecko, and Red Diamond Rattlesnake. We began by studying and sketching each subject, then explored ways to incorporate pattern and texture into the designs. Using traditional block printing tools, the students carved their artwork into linoleum blocks and created prints. These original prints were then integrated directly into the mural, resulting in a cohesive composition that reflects both individual expression and collective effort.

The mural’s black and white contrasts, warm earth tones, and sage green accents are drawn from the students’ printmaking work, creating a refined, hand-crafted aesthetic. Featuring local flora and fauna, the piece also acknowledges the natural beauty of the region and our connection to this space.

This mural represents the skill, creativity, and teamwork of the students who contributed to it, and it remains a lasting presence on campus.
